We will not send a representative to İmralı says CHP Deputy Group Chair

NEWS CENTER - CHP Deputy Group Chair Murat Emir announced that the CHP will not send a representative to İmralı.

At the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission meeting in Parliament, the CHP decided not to go to İmralı.  CHP Deputy Group Chair Murat Emir announced that the CHP will not send a representative to Imrali. In his statement, Emir said: "I would like to express that it is not right for a meeting to discuss going to Imrali to be held in secret from our nation. It is important for everyone here to clearly state the position of each political party. As the CHP, we do not consider it right to send a member to the Commission."

Emir noted that the CHP is striving for democratisation and the recognition of the Kurds and will continue to participate in the commission's work, but added that no steps have been taken regarding the kayyım (trustee) imposed on their party or the existence of political prisoners. Emir added: "Instead of paving the way for democratic politics, political cases have further obstructed it. While solutions to these problems are needed, our nation does not consent to all problems being reduced to the issue of going to Imrali. Presenting this as the only option is not right."

Emir added that state officials had visited Imrali and DEM Party MPs had gone there: "Instead of only five MPs going to the island without even the commission chair being present, it is possible to conduct a more participatory process using technological means. The public is questioning what contribution this insistence will make in a process where steps such as the removal of trustees and the opening of the way for democratic politics have not been taken. We do not consider it right to send members to the Imrali delegation. The CHP is facing a closure case. Sixteen elected mayors and a presidential candidate are in prison. Our party remains in this commission. If this nation's hopes for peace are once again to be squandered for personal ambitions, the CHP will stand in the way."
