IZMIR – An armed attack was organised against the Izmir office of Evrensel Newspaper at night and one person was detained.
An armed attack was organised against the Izmir office of Evrensel Newspaper at around 1.30 am local time. Police teams arrived at the scene after the attack and collected bullet cores. While it was determined that the attacks was carried out by a person named Isa Can, it was recorded that he was brought to the office by a person named Ibrahim Halil Bilal.
While Evrensel’s signboard was shot, 7 bullet holes were detected on the signboard. Police teams arrived in front of the building after the attack and investigated the building and the neighbourhood. İbrahim Halil Bilal was detained after the attack.
Evrensel Newspaper issued a statement on the incident and said that all journalists who pursue the truth were intimidated. It was stated that the attacks was directed not only against Evrensel, but also against the public’s right to information.
“Evrensel will continue to pursue the truth, to give voice to workers, labourers and the oppressed, to shout out the truth today and tomorrow as it did yesterday; it will keep its pen even sharper,” the statement said.
