WAN - Ozan Balcı, the governor of the city, was appointed as trustee to the Wan Metropolitan Municipality by the decision of the Ministry of Interior.
While the vigil in front of the municipality against the prison sentence given to Wan (Van) Metropolitan Municipality Co-mayor Abdullah Zeydan continued on its 5th day, police raided the building at around 04.00 am. Hundreds of police blockaded the area where the municipality is located. Those taking part in the vigil blocked the municipality building. The police used gas bombs and broke the doors and windows of the municipality building. The police used violence against many people inside the building. Many people including politicians and journalists, were detained.
JINNEWS reporter Rabia Önver, Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reporters Bilal Babat and Mehmet Güleş, journalists Medine Mamedoglu and Behçet Bayhan were detained. Journalists were subjected to police violence.
Police officers tried to make Abdullah Zeydan sign the Ministry of Interior's notification on his suspension from office. Zeydan stated that he do not accept the decision and did not sign the notification.
After the raid, police officers took down the banner with the debt table of the trustee period. A large number of people, including DEM Party MPs and co-mayors, started a protest in front of the municipality. The slogan "There is a thief" was frequently chanted in front of the municipality.
As the protests continued, the Ministry of Interior announced that Abdullah Zeydan was susbended from office "as a interim measure" and that Governor Ozan Balcı was appointed as a trustee.
