VAN - Stating that with the regulations of the AKP, murderers of women are freed, TJA Activist Dilan Yıldız said: "The main reason of the gendercide is the government."

While the women continues to fight against the male-dominated state, the number of women who killed their attackers in self defense increased lately. During the rule of the AKP which claimed that there will be zero tolerance to violence against women when it first came to power in 2002, 7 thousand 455 women were murdered by men. The 'women policy' of the government, deepened the violence instead of preventing it and destroyed all preventive mechanisms.

Free Women's Movement (Tevgera Jinên Azad-TJA) activist Dilan Yıldız spoke about the results of the AKP's policies targeting the women's struggle.

AROUND 8 THOUSAND WOMEN KILLED

Pointing out that nearly 8 thousand women were murdered during the AKP's 19-year rule, Yıldız said the femicide in Turkey is actually a gendercide. Underlining that the reason of this is the policies of the AKP, Yıldız said: "Because they released the murderers and sex offenders with their new laws and regulations and amnesties. Penalties are not deterrent. The discourse of men in the cases we deal with everyday is directly in line with the discourse of the government. The fact that a man thinks that they can kill a women and walk free in two years, shows the policies of the government."

KILL OR BE KILLED

Stating that the policies of the government makes the women think they will have to kill or be killed, Yıldız said: "The state does not protect and defend women. Women are at the end of their rope. A women who kill her attacker while being beaten or torture gets longer prison sentences than men. We see that there is a male legal system. We saw over and over that a women can be sentenced to aggravated life in prison for killing her attacker while protecting herself and her children. This makes us hurt. Either protect the women, or don't punish them!"

Recalling that Melek İpek who killed her husband in self- defense by whom she was systematically subjected to violence, is tried with a request of life imprisonment and many women including TJA Spokesperson Ayşe Gökkan and Democratic Society Congress Co-Chair Leyla Güven were arrested, Yıldız said the reason of all of these is that the women's struggle is intimidating the male dominated state. Yıldız said: "As they take one person, we become thousands of people. Because we are half of society."
